That leaves two groups actually looking for an alternative: organisations, who pay €259 per user per year, and people who like the licence fine but not the memory use and start-up time of a JetBrains IDE. The list below is ordered for the first group, because “free for commercial use” is the hardest constraint to satisfy.
Worth being honest about what you give up. DataGrip’s refactoring, inspections and schema-aware navigation are the deepest in this category, and nothing free matches them. If you picked DataGrip for the editor rather than for its engine list, every option here is a step down and you should weigh the €259 seriously.
First, decide which problem you’re solving
Paying the €259 to keep the deepest editor is a fine outcome. One option to rule out: Azure Data Studio
It still appears on most “best SQL client” lists, and it should not. Azure Data Studio was retired on 28 February 2026 and receives no further updates or security patches. Microsoft’s own recommendation is to move to VS Code with the MSSQL extension, which opens existing queries, scripts and database projects without conversion. Do not start a 2026 migration by moving onto it.
If the editor was never the problem
Every tool above, DataGrip included, is single-user. If what actually hurts is that three people keep rewriting the same query because nobody can see each other’s work, or that a report gets exported by hand every Monday, no swap between desktop IDEs changes it.
